Why Is My Air Fryer Not Heating?

Most of the time an air fryer won’t heat because the basket or drawer isn’t fully closed, it isn’t getting power, or a built-in safety cutoff has paused it after overheating. These are all easy to check yourself. Less often the heating element itself has failed, which is a repair for the manufacturer, not something to fix at home. Work through the safe checks below in order before you assume the appliance is broken.

Use this as a starting point, then confirm with the steps below.

Most likely causes

1. The basket or drawer isn’t fully closed. Almost every air fryer has a safety switch that only lets it heat when the basket is pushed all the way in. If it’s slightly open, or food is blocking it from seating, the unit stays powered but won’t warm up. Push the drawer firmly closed and make sure nothing is jammed at the back.

2. A power or outlet problem. No power means no heat. Confirm the plug is fully seated, try a different wall outlet, and check whether a fuse or breaker has tripped. Avoid extension cords and power strips, which can’t always deliver the current an air fryer needs. If another appliance works in the same outlet, the outlet is fine.

3. An overheat cutoff has kicked in. Many models have a thermal cutoff that pauses heating if the unit gets too hot, often after back-to-back batches or when the vents are blocked. The fan may keep running while the heat stays off. Unplug it, let it cool completely for 20 to 30 minutes, make sure the rear and top vents are clear, then try again.

4. Overcrowding or blocked airflow. An air fryer heats by moving hot air. Pack it too full, or line it with a solid sheet of foil or parchment that covers the holes, and it can feel like it isn’t heating even when it is. Cook in smaller batches and leave the airflow paths open.

5. A faulty heating element. If a cool, correctly seated air fryer with confirmed power still won’t heat, the element or an internal part may have failed. This is not a home repair. Stop using it and contact the manufacturer.

Safe checks, step by step

  1. Unplug the unit and let it cool if it has been running.
  2. Reseat the basket or drawer, pushing it fully closed so the safety switch engages.
  3. Test the outlet with another appliance, and plug the air fryer directly into the wall.
  4. Clear the vents at the back and top so the overheat cutoff can reset.
  5. Set a normal temperature and time, then run it empty for a couple of minutes to see if it warms.
  6. If it still won’t heat, stop and contact the maker with your model number.

Never open the housing, poke at internal wiring, or attempt an electrical repair. Air fryers run on mains voltage, and element or wiring work should only be done by the manufacturer or a qualified service center.

When it heats, check your results

Once it’s heating again, remember that air fryer times are guides, not guarantees, and vary by model and batch size. Preheat where the recipe calls for it, and always check for doneness rather than trusting the timer alone. For food safety, cook to a safe internal temperature measured with a thermometer: chicken and other poultry to 165F (74C), ground meats to 160F (71C), whole cuts of beef, pork, lamb and fish to at least 145F (63C) with a short rest. Treat any recipe temperature or time as a starting point.

Why does the fan work but there’s no heat? That points to a safety cutoff or an element problem, not a power fault. Let the unit cool fully, clear the vents, and retest. If the fan still runs without heat, contact the manufacturer.

Can a new air fryer fail to heat out of the box? It’s rare, but it happens. Confirm the basket is fully closed and the outlet works first. If it’s genuinely faulty, don’t attempt a fix. Use the warranty and contact the seller or maker for a replacement.

Does cleaning affect heating? Heavy grease buildup can restrict airflow and trigger the overheat cutoff, so a unit that pauses often may just need a good clean. See how to clean an air fryer.
