Where it should go

Away from the wall behind it. Most air fryers vent hot air out the back or top. Leave roughly 5 inches of clearance behind the unit so the exhaust isn’t trapped against a wall or backsplash.
With side clearance too. A few inches of open space on each side lets air move freely around the housing and keeps nearby items from absorbing radiant heat.
Below cabinet height, or with headroom above. Basket air fryers with a lid that lifts, and oven-style models with a door that swings down or out, both need clearance above and in front. Check that clearance before installing one under a cabinet.
Near a grounded outlet, without an extension cord. Air fryers draw significant current. Plug directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or extension cord shared with other high-draw appliances.
Where it shouldn’t go
- Directly against a wall or backsplash — traps hot exhaust and can discolor or warp nearby surfaces over time.
- Under a cabinet with no headroom — blocks the lid or door from opening fully and traps heat above the unit.
- On top of another countertop appliance — blocks airflow underneath and can overheat both units.
- Near flammable items — paper towel holders, curtains or wooden utensil blocks close to the vent side are a fire-safety risk over repeated use.
