How to Reheat Chicken in an Air Fryer

Reheat chicken in an air fryer at 350F for about 4-6 minutes, until the thickest part reaches 165F inside. That short blast of hot, moving air brings the skin and coating back to crisp while warming the meat through, which is exactly what a microwave can’t do. Times vary with the cut and how cold the chicken is, so treat the numbers below as a starting point and always check for doneness before serving.

The quick method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 350F for a couple of minutes. Starting hot helps the outside re-crisp instead of steaming.
  2. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the basket, skin or coating facing up. Don’t overcrowd — pieces need space around them so the air can circulate.
  3. Cook for 4-6 minutes. Check at the 4-minute mark and add time as needed.
  4. Check the temperature. The thickest part should read 165F on an instant-read thermometer. Reheat in short 1-2 minute bursts until it gets there.
  5. Rest for a minute before eating, since the center keeps warming after it comes out.

If pieces are cold from the fridge, let them sit on the counter for 10 minutes first. Chicken straight from the fridge takes longer and can end up hot outside but cool in the middle.

Times by type of chicken

Use these as starting points, not fixed rules. Thicker, bone-in pieces need the most time; thin, already-crispy pieces need the least. Always confirm 165F in the center.

How to keep it crispy, not dry

The whole point of reheating chicken in an air fryer is the texture, so a few small habits make a big difference:

Wings, fried and roast: what changes

Wings reheat beautifully because the skin re-crisps in the moving air. Shake the basket or flip them once so both sides get color.

Fried chicken comes back close to fresh, which is where the air fryer really beats a microwave. Keep the heat moderate at 350F so the coating crisps before the outside browns too far, and give each piece space.

Roast or rotisserie chicken reheats gently at 350F. Keep the skin facing up, and because these cuts are often leaner, watch the time and loosely tent any breast meat that looks like it’s drying.

What temperature should reheated chicken reach? Reheat all chicken to an internal temperature of 165F, measured at the thickest part with a food thermometer. That’s the safe temperature for poultry, whether it’s wings, fried chicken or roast pieces.

Can you reheat chicken from frozen in an air fryer? You can, but it takes longer and reheats unevenly. Thaw it in the fridge first when you can, then reheat as above. If you do it from frozen, add several minutes and check the center reaches 165F.

Why is my reheated chicken dry? Usually it’s been in too long or set too hot. Chicken is already cooked, so pull it as soon as it hits 165F, use a moderate 350F, and give lean cuts a light spritz of oil. If your air fryer runs hot or unevenly with no food in it, check the manufacturer’s guidance rather than guessing.
