How Long to Cook Chicken in an Air Fryer

Boneless chicken breast takes about 15-20 minutes at 375F, and bone-in or boneless thighs take about 20-25 minutes at 380F. In every case the number that actually matters is the internal temperature: chicken is safely cooked when the thickest part reaches 165F (74C) on an instant-read thermometer. Times vary with the size of the pieces and the model, so treat the minutes as a starting point and check for doneness.

Boneless thigh380F18-22 min165F

These are widely-used starting points for pieces around 6-8 oz. Thicker cuts need longer, thinner ones less, so always confirm with a thermometer rather than the clock. For times on other foods, see our full air fryer cooking times chart.

Chicken breast: step by step

  1. Pat the chicken dry and lightly coat with a little oil so seasoning sticks and the surface crisps.
  2. Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes if your model recommends it.
  3. Arrange in a single layer with space between pieces so hot air can circulate. Don’t stack or overcrowd.
  4. Cook at 375F, flipping once at the halfway point for even browning.
  5. Check the internal temperature in the thickest part. Pull the chicken at 165F and let it rest a few minutes before slicing.

Even, thin breasts cook faster and more evenly. If one end is much thicker, you can gently pound it to a more uniform thickness so the whole piece finishes at the same time.

Chicken thighs: step by step

Thighs are more forgiving than breast because the extra fat keeps them moist, which makes them a great first chicken cut to try.

  1. Season and lightly oil the thighs. If they have skin, place them skin-side up so it crisps in the airflow.
  2. Cook at 380F in a single layer.
  3. Flip bone-in thighs once partway through; thin boneless thighs often don’t need flipping.
  4. Confirm 165F at the thickest point, avoiding the bone, which can read cooler than the meat around it.

Tips for even, juicy chicken

Why a thermometer matters

Chicken can look done on the outside while the center is still underdone, and it can hit temperature before it looks deeply browned. An instant-read thermometer removes the guesswork: insert it into the thickest part, away from any bone, and cook until it reads 165F (74C). This is the safe minimum internal temperature for all poultry. Checking temperature also stops you overcooking, which is the usual reason air fryer chicken turns out dry.

Do I need to flip chicken in an air fryer? Flipping once at the halfway mark isn’t strictly required, but it gives more even browning and helps both sides cook at the same rate. Thin boneless pieces are the most forgiving if you skip it.

Why is my air fryer chicken dry? Almost always overcooking. Pull the chicken as soon as it reaches 165F, use a thermometer instead of the clock, and choose thighs over breast if you want more built-in moisture.

Can I cook frozen chicken in an air fryer? You can, but it takes noticeably longer than thawed chicken and needs an extra-careful temperature check, since the center is slowest to come up to heat. Add several minutes and confirm 165F throughout before serving.
